New Zealand has two main islands—the North Island and the South Island—and more than 600 smaller islands. These smaller islands are located around the mainland coasts, with more distant groups like the Kermadecs and Chathams also considered part of New Zealand.
North Island: Also known as Te Ika-a-Maui, this is one of the two largest islands.
South Island: Also known as Te Waipounamu, this is the other main island, and the largest of the two.
Smaller Islands: Over 600 smaller islands are located off the coast of the mainland, as well as more distant groups like the Kermadecs, Chathams, and subantarctic islands.
